Apart from an obvious name change to something like "Aussie Supercars"....

Let's get something out the way early.... V8's are looking for a new rule set from 2017, rumours of Ford leaving after next year with Ford moving away from V8 engines and the Falcon. So I propose they join forces with DTM and SuperGT. Also you will need to ignore the previous years of racing, I for one find current DTM boring, however a new rule set we'll get new racing.

The two touring car giants have agreed a shared rule set that involves a 2.0ltr turbocharged engine that is expected to produce around 700bhp. Chassis regs have also been agreed with a shared platform across both series. Testing is expected to begin in 2016 or even late 2015.

You may or may not have noticed how this all links in yet.

Others things to remember are that the new class 1 regulations have some extrodinary manufacturers BMW, Audi, Mercesdes, Honda, Nissan and many more... imagine that lot at the Bathurst 1000!

Aussie Supercars could mange there format as they like too, race length, tyre compound, pit stops and so on.

So could Volvo and Holden be persuaded to join the party? because remember Nissan and Mercesdes are all ready there....

James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-38973069490853432282014-10-14T12:33:00.000-07:002014-10-14T12:33:01.969-07:00Best ever helmet design?

Today my Mrs asked me a few motorsport related questions, which is a first....

I got "who's your favourite driver ever?" to which I replied "Mika Hakkinen and Colin McRae"

Then I got asked "favourite track?" again not a too difficult answer "Le Sarthe and The Nordschleife"

Then the Mrs threw a curve ball, "your favourite racing helmet design?" Now the obvious answer would be Aryton Senna but it's extremely distinctive but great design? Who knows.

So that conversation set my mind into overdrive, racking my brains for the best helmet design. I have a few in mind but I want you're input. Send me your all time favourite helmets. I will accept them from any form of motorsport including bikes.

So the plan is to hold a vote via the blog/twitter to decide on the greatest helmet, and for the first time in my Motorsport World Blog history I 'm going to allow # votes.

Get thinking.. send them too my via my twitter account @jimmyb_84 #HelmetEntry or leave a comment to this blog. You have 7 days.

I'm going to start the ball rolling, I nominate Sebastian Wheldon

James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-54595660638166369102014-07-27T15:06:00.000-07:002014-07-27T15:06:03.199-07:00The Winner is........
So the race has been run and the winners have been decided, many incidents took place and obviously our thoughts are with Marcus Mahy and his speedy recovery.

The final results of the Fantasy Sportscar are in, the winners are;

1st Rupert Coales 49pts
2nd Red Firecracker 47pts (Kelvin Pope)
3rd Marshals Racing 44pts (Rob Jaina)
4th Nicks Nutters 40pts (Nick Holland)
5th Johnny P 27pts
6th BBRE4L 26pts (Ben Clarke)
7th Kurt Hoegh 23pts
8th Shy Ted Motorsport 20pts (Alistair McLeod)

*Note* I have awarded 5pts for pole position to the team that were quickest in superpole, the original way I planned to award the points was to the fastest driver in qualifying, however an aggregate qualifying doesn't work for this.
Drivers points have also been awarded according to class results not overall results. Manufacturer and Team points have been awarded for overall results.

Find a link below to the spreadsheet I used to calculate the scores (I know it's basic so don't laugh).
I started in the usual place, Google. however no useful search results appeared.

So I decided to try myself, a few draw backs are that I'm not a genius program/software designer so an apps out of the question, so I propose, providing I get enough interest, a trial run.
I will attempt to analyse the data from the #12 Rebellion and pitch it against the current World Endurance champions Audi #1 E-tron Quattro.

I'm going to start by breaking down the sector times and compare them, I have selected the first 10 laps of the race to keep the varibles to a minimum and also to get the cars at ultimate pace. I will start with the obvious, Sector 1.

You will notice starightaway that Audi was the faster car but we expected that, it's not that I expect the Rebellion Toyota to be faster but it's the amount of distance between the cars that we are intrested in.
Reviewing the data as you will see above my first impressions are not quite so good. I calulated the average distance between the cars to be 1.3 seconds in Sector 1 alone. Once the cars hit traffic on lap 4 for the Audi, and lap 5 for the rebellion, the splits between them flutuate somewhat.

Once again the Audi was the faster of the 2 cars, until once again traffic appears on the scene. The average time distance between them in sector 2 is an eye-watering 1.4 seconds. So currently the Rebellion is 2.7s slower on average and we havent even got to sector 3 yet. An early conclusion would be that Rebellion's drivers need to push through traffic to gain any advantage possible and minmise the gap.

Again first impressions prove the #1 Audi faster through the laps until lap 9 where the Audi must have caught traffic at a bad time. The average distance through sector 3 reads better than the previous sectors at 0.7s slower, however it's only a 31s sector mainly consisting of the Hanger straight, Stowe, Vale, Club and across the line. I proved a previous blog that the rebellion has near enough the same straight line speed as the Audi but it appears they have sacrificed downforce as proven by the slower times in the previous sectors.

I also checked the overall time both cars spent in the pits during the race. Both pitted 8 times, The Audi being Diesel and Hybrid is aloud only 61 litres but the Rebellion Toyota has a 75 litres allowance. On the face of it used think Rebellion could gain sometime back by pitting less than the Audi? However as I just mentioned they both pit 8 times. So looking into it further did rebellion gain anytime back by not changing the tyres as much? Well I can say the #1 Audi spent a combined time of 9 min 44 seconds in the pits and the #12 Rebellion 9 mins 48 seconds. Not much to be gained back in the pits then, with similar times spent servicing the cars.

Still struggling to find anywhere were Rebellion have had a chance to gain anything back from the Audi during the race, I have looked through plenty of data and I can find no evidence where the Rebellion is suprior or the FIA/ACO have manufactored the sporting/technical regulations to give the LMP1 privateers a chance to snatch a podium should any of the top cars suffer with problems. My calulations have shown that over a lap on average they trail by 3.4 seconds and have proven that Rebellion's pit crew are just as savvy at servicing as Joest.

I fear the evidence suggests that FIA/ACO want to put off (intentionally or not) privateer teams from enetering LMP1 unless they give them more of a break. I don't think giving them bigger fuel tanks is the answer surely it just adds weight, incresses tyre wear and possable component fatigue. Also bear in mind both cars have the same base weight of 900kg. I'm not claiming to have the answers but just pointing out something needs to be addressed.

Hopefully the the big news that is due from Bart Hayden (Team Manager of Rebellion) at Spa will be a step towards securing the privateer in the top class of sportcar racing, long term.

All comments and thoughts are welcome.
I haven't blogged for quite a while as some of you may know, but I'm going to give you all a little flavour of the direction I'm hoping to turn my blog into.

My opening example is the data from Silverstone speed traps from the first round of the FIA World Endurance Championship. I have pitched the top 10 speeds recorded by the #1 Audi, #8 Toyota and #12 Rebellion.

You'll notice straightaway that the #8 Toyota has the slowest recorded speed in all 10 laps, I was originally surprised by this too. The obvious reason for this is down to the setup route Toyota chose with their cars for Silverstone, preferring a complete high downforce setup.

Rebellion on the other hand are a lot closer to Audi in terms of top speed than I anticipated, even with the recently installed aero upgrade. This explains, to a degree why Rebellion at the start of the Silverstone race were chasing the #7 Toyota of Alex Wurz.

Audi on the other-hand were the class of the field as you would expect with their latest 2013 spec E-tron Quattro. Recording a top speed of 272Kph (169Mph).

With the recently announced debut for the Audi E-Tron Quattro Long tail that will compete at the second race of the season, joined by the latest Toyota and possably a slippery version of the Rebellion. Spa already shows signs of a classic and you can rest assured I will trawl through the data.

All your comments and feedback are welcome. I'm pleased to announce that it makes a return for March 16th 2013.

You have the chance to watch the first round of the ALMS championship and also Bruno Senna's debut race for Aston Martin Racing. A 65inch flat screen TV courtesy of D&C complete with sound system. Live timing will also be on display for the true anoraks on a slightly smaller screen, throughout the race.
Aston Martin Racing also will be supporting the event again. Last year there was also a tasty centrepiece for proceedings in the shape of the N24 Zagato... What for 2013?
You won't get shot. Just make you want to come even more, did I mention you will be watch the race in an Aston Martin Dealership, so plenty of eye candy for us petrol heads (no diesels here)
Lets just say you couldn't actually count or you'd be counting for a while.

The device was invented by Dr. Robert Hubbard in the early 1980's. A discussion with a mutual racing friend after an unfortunate incident which saw Patrick Jacquemart lose his life after a testing accident involving a sudden stop. Dr Hubbard saw a weakness during a sudden stop accident, while the body would remain in place due to the seat belts the head remained un-tethered and momentum caused the head to continue moving forward, resulting in serious injury or instant death called a Basilar skull fracture.

Dr Hubbard came up with the HANS device, which stopped the head from going forward to extremes, reducing the risk of Basilar skull fracture. At first no one was interested in the device, it took nearly 10 years and some high profile deaths of Rolan Ratzenberger, Scott Brayton and Dale Earnhardt for the device to finally set to work.

1. HANS device

2. Tether (one per side)

3. Helmet anchor (one per side)

4. Shoulder support

In the mid-90s, Mercedes Benz have decided to further develop the device in order to implement it in their Formula One programme. After further evaluation from the International Automobile Federation it became a mantatory requirement in F1 2003 and since then all major series have followed suit right down to club level. Reported sales for the device are over 300,000.

In my eyes the HANS device is one of the greatest inventions to ever come from motorsport, it has saved the lives of many drivers since it's introduction, Robert Kubica, Ernesto Viso, Kenny Bernstein and Michael McDowell to name a few (a You Tube search will prove my point) and many more.

The work of Dr. Robert Hubbard deserves to go down in history and I'm sure if you asked a driver about the device he would have nothing but praise. A truly great invention.

James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-85569223561474193662012-02-14T06:40:00.002-08:002012-02-14T06:46:04.311-08:00Watch the Sebring 12hr at Aston MartinHaving had "one of those" discussions with a friend on Twitter (Me) a couple of weeks ago and inspired by the Audi quattro Rooms (small "q" Hindy!) showing of Truth in 24, I would like open up the invitation to you to join us at the Aston Martin Showroom here in Derby, where I will be holding a private, ticket only, screening of the entire race coverage of the opening round of the WEC from Sebring, Florida on Saturday 17th March 2012.

With the assistance of Brand Partners Bang & Olufsen, we will show the race feed on the big screen, from early afternoon on Saturday and on into the wee small hours (I know Sportscar fans are made of resilient stuff). Aston Martin are happy to supply one of their new Vantage Race Cars for you to have a poke around, Mrs Dunkie and I will feed you (Pea Soup, Chilli or similar) and I will speak nicely to the Spotter Guides people so that we can have a sweep for the winners in each class - Bottle of Bubbly so that you can celebrate with the winning teams if you so wish.

Your parking will be on site and covered by security at all times. As you will understand, I am not in a position to supply any alcohol during the evening, but if guests wish to bring their own "lubrication" then that is fine but must be within reason.

There are some other nice little things that I am working on with John, Eve and the Team to make the evening even more exciting, so watch this space.

Tickets are strictly limited to 50 places and will cost the princely sum of £15.00 per head, paid in advance only as guest names will need to be on list for my Security Man to let you in.

I thought this might be an opportunity for a bit of a night out in a nice environment, bearing in mind it is also St. Patricks Day, a bit of racing, a bit of food and more importantly some friendly banter with like-minded Sportscar fans for what promises to be a fantastic spectacle with 60+ cars on the grid for the first race of the season.

Please email me on paul.dunk@stratstone.com or Direct Message on Twitter @Dunkie5150 to reserve your place. Once added to the list I will need to take your payment, full contact information to send your tickets to. Tickets will be on a first come, first served basis hence the reason I am posting this on here first.

Hope you can join us!

Regards,

Dunkie.

Please respond to Paul's email or i can forward your info on. However remember it's a first come first served basis, so do not waste anytime and I will see you there.

I just want to thank Paul for taking this upon himself to organize, he has truly has surpassed anything I could of done.

See you all there.James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-9518412973368382292012-02-05T04:12:00.001-08:002012-02-05T04:13:57.827-08:00What to look out for in 2012WEC
2012 is going to be all about the Hybrid. With the formation of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the entry of Toyota it will once again be between 2 giants of the motoring world.

After the news that Peugeot had pulled the plug on their endurance program the competition was looking slim within the new WEC but Toyata took the bate and stepped up, confirming a double entry in the season highlight at Le Mans but taking on 4 Audi’s will be tough but fascinating for us fans.

A third Manufacturer will also be making an appearance, Mazda being run by Dyson Racing have been accepted by the ACO for the 24hrs of Le Mans. It remains how much the Mazda factory are involved within the development of the Lola.

Expect the unexpected.

The LMP2 category's surprisingly has a strong entry for 2012 WEC with 9 teams competing throughout the season, being doubled for Le Mans. Even though this is the second tier within the WEC do not discount it, I believe LMP2 will provide some of the best racing as long as the fragile nature of the cars can be sorted.

All 9 WEC entries have a tie up with a manufacturer Honda, Nissan cover most entrants with Morgan and Lotus joining the Japanese firms.

DTM
This could be the best year for DTM for a while, BMW have entered this years championship and the full might and resources being thrown into the V8 touring car series.

Audi and Mercedes the longer established teams within DTM could be in for a surprise. Two further reasons to watch will include Andy Priaulx and the fact the cars themselves are stunning.

MOTOGP
I say this because I can see a resurgence from Ducati and the reemergence of Valentiono Rossi and that is always great for the sport. Stoner will be on a strong Honda, Lorenzo returning from injury and appearing back on the Yamaha all signs are good for a great season.

Also the top bikes will be built to the latest rules moving on from 800cc machines to 1000cc! That alone must be worth a look.

INDYCAR
After the tragic events at Las Vegas in the final 2011 round of the which saw the passing of Dan Wheldon, 2012 will debut the car Dan helped to develop, the DW12.

An up and down season last year as regards driving standards and officals 2012 will be a step forward in all respects. Changes have been made throughout the series and I see a great year ahead.

New engines from Honda, Chevrolet and Lotus split throughout the grid will provide another element to mix up the season. The new car is new to everyone and I can see a a lower ranked team competing with the likes of Ganassi. Returning drivers and new drivers will also add another exciting mix.

SKYSPORTSF1
Regardless of the politics which have lead to sky showing F1 in the UK and fact we must pay for it. I can see Sky stepping up the level of coverage available to fans for 2012 and setting a new standard.

With the launch of their stand alone channel in March, I wait with bated breath to see what Sky are bringing to F1.

Keep your eye out for all of the above, I will be watching and commenting throughout the season on twitter and via my blogs.James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-7283784092535862962011-09-25T03:29:00.000-07:002011-09-25T03:51:09.568-07:00Mclaren could be missing a trick. The all new Mclaren MP4-12C GT3 race car has been competing at a high standard in the development year for the car. Making a great showing for itself in the Spa 24hr and appearances in the British GT championship, ready for it's 2012 appearance in the Blancpain Endurance Series with customer teams.

However I think Mclaren are missing a trick. Why don't they run a full works program, their knowledge of racing and technical ability within the Mclaren group are unrelieved. Even if this was just a one-off for the Le Mans 24hr. Surely they could use more of there resources to, seeing as the 24hr race and the F1 calendar do not clash in 2012 an appearance by Lewis,Jenson, Paffet or De La Rosa would really add weight. This will create huge interest for the Woking based squad and would be covered closely worldwide.

I don't want to take anything away from the customer squads who will be running the car from 2012 but I just can't help but feel a works entrance would be amazing, further adding to the spectacle of the 24hrs of Le Mans.

If I ever manage to come across Ron Dennis at any point I would love to but this to him.James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-37805864074450175202011-09-19T14:24:00.000-07:002011-09-19T15:17:15.155-07:00My Day at Mallory ParkToday I am writing a different kind of blog, more of a diary entry.

A couple of weekends ago, I got to go to the "friendly Circuit" Mallory park. This was the first race track I ever went to with my dad many years ago and I will always love it.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-PaGdKxMpYT5brjEwPd0ZgeGcFFQOsjjUZL0QuUOWpfkC3-NkS8jUNur_Dcban-zuTWKkmB1VhA4JDwNxUrJUDzPDUtpTQhjVljP6Asl9h-U8w9tPr0EQg26RhD36s7CnzOPYaO2_qa8/s320/photo%25281%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654189172855936898" />
I was attending for Legends Racing UK and Motors TV and would compile their website reports, I also had the privilege of meeting James Holman the driver of Legends #83 (@legendnumber83 for twitter users)who had very kindly put my blog web address on the back of his car! I can now die happy with a life box ticked. Cheers James.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOBjLgiM3UFXEFFQ_kx9cPkLBweSWeCdDMdL4tess3d91ZuUJHhLXFU_ih43rKWyb5G5kUnoKQhrQwr39_Hj_uNfD6gdXdwgHkYKfCMUYyex2dtt5_O_5XRz-So6PsWBS7XZU-rHV1Uec/s320/photo.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654189452353705890" />
My day started with a cup of coffee with the Holman family and a quick look at my logo. I then went of in-search of a place to park myself complete with laptop for the day and lucky me got to sit at the top of the tower just next to the circuit commentator. A great view of the whole track which is a novelty, I wasn't going to miss anything, I normally have to rely on the circuit CCTV to catch incidents. On the race schedule today were 3x Legends races, 3x UK Pickup Championship and a classic clubmans race. While I was waiting for my area to be unlocked, I was asked by the circuit steward if I fancied a ride in the safety car to help with final checks to the track, well it would of been rude to say no. So that was two life boxes ticked on the same day. I can also report the hairpin is very banked and Devils elbow is tighter than I thought. What a track!

All of the days races were highly entertaining both the legends and the pickups provided extremely close racing keeping me glued to the track. I also had the pleasure of sharing the control tower with the great guys spotting for the pickups, this provided a great insight. I also had the company of Ian Snowman from Autosport and Motorsport news another great guy.

I managed a great walk around the paddock chatting to Drivers and teams about all sorts. However this was the same day as the Italian GP and I find it impossible to avoid the race and watch it at home. This is proving great practice for when sky have the F1 rights, I can say it's going to be a nightmare! Just stay in bed all day a lot easier.

A great day my reports are below.

Motors TV Legends Report

Legends UK Race Report

Finally reports and things on the way.....

Bathurst race reports (can't wait)
www.v8times.co.uk articles probably 2
Britcar 24hr race report with Gary Marshall (@marshallgp)
Plus my blogs to keep a look out

Cheers GuysJames Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-23893895647048366172011-08-28T22:49:00.000-07:002011-08-28T23:26:40.733-07:00Just Leave it alone! For once. I have just heard the news/rumours of 2 DRS zones for the Italian GP at Monza and on this occasion can the FIA please leave the drivers to get on with it and stop interfering.

Generally I have been a fan of the DRS system, on occasion it has seemed to work well, as seen at Barcelona for example and saving us from another lack lustre race. Pirelli have played there part too however.

Monza over the years has never been shy of over-taking due the low-down force needed to be competitive on a such a massively fast track. If the 2 DRS zones are used this will allow the teams to run more down-force which will be offset by the DRS zones. The problem with following a car with a greater down-force set-up is the so called "dirty air" created by the the manipulation of the wings. This in-turn stops F1 cars from following each other out of the corners and we end up back where we were a couple of years ago.

The characteristics of Monza allows the teams to strip their cars of all the fancy, complex wings and go back to basics. Over the years this has created some great racing with cars being able to follow closely and actually being able to overtake. This is where the drivers make all the calls and the fans get to see what they want, a true fight for the win.

So I'm begging the FIA to leave Monza alone, it was never broke, so stop trying to fix it. This leaves Mark Webber as the possible leaver from the team, before the Silverstone GP you would of said this is unlikely but after I'm not so sure.

I would say that Webber completely ignored the team orders issued to him over the radio and being a number 2 to Vettel is no longer ideal for the Australian, a move is on the cards.

If this was to come true, a vacant seat could be going spare for the 26yr. In my opinion RBR are one of the only teams that could afford Hamilton for a start and for further racing reasons Hamilton needs this too.

Hamilton needs to follow other greats from the sport including Prost, Senna, Schumacher and even Alonso to a Degree. All great driver only become great driver by winning. All these drivers have been in the right car at the right time, it's an extra sense the greats have, Hamilton needs to realise this to get himself into that Red Bull and take advantage of Adrian Newey! If he stays at Mclaren I cannot see him winning another championship any time soon (Although I'd love to see this happen) a decline seems to be happening at Mclaren. That is another story for another day.

Lewis could fade into the distance if he does not get into a more competitive drive and being in Red Bull would be his best shot, he would not get dominated by Vettel as he'd have the extra speed and aggressive driving style and could equal the balance, within the RBR team.

It is time for Hamilton to leave Mclaren and become a great.James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-38912193062116007142011-07-13T07:03:00.000-07:002011-07-13T07:37:20.885-07:00when is it on?The one thing that bugs the hell out of me is all this great motor-sport from all around the world and we have no chance to watch it live! We first hear about from news feeds via social media.

How are we suppose to get excited and become fans of these series if we have no way of watching it, we have to wait for some crap highlight show, where the presenter knows nothing about it (I won't name any names).

I for example am a massive fan of the V8 supercars, we have to wait a week to see re-runs of the races via motors TV (I'm grateful they show it at all) but by that time my twitter feed has ruined the results and I find it hard to be on the edge of my seat, ignore Twitter for a week no chance! V8 supercars will only allow Australian's to access a live broadband feed to I can't watch that either! Looks like we have to wait for the only live race-Bathurst.

Some series are catching on though, for example, the FIA GT1 World championship show a free live feed via there website, which includes all practice and race sessions. I fully recommend watching it.

I wished they could show a live feed to any country that has no TV rights or make a live feed available for a couple of quid, in an itunes stylie. I'd love to see things like the DTM, British GT among hundreds more.....

Get motor-sport to the fans and you'll benefit in the long run, plus if your being viewed, you'll get sponsored.......... Just let us see it LIVE for god sake!James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3314551536767883584.post-13382208590574361532011-07-12T12:10:00.001-07:002011-07-12T12:22:08.695-07:00Hello it's meBefore I start to blog on a regular basis I thought I would introduce myself to you all.

I'm currently working for Motors TV writing race reports and news articles for the website content. If you google "James Foster Motors TV" you should find a few things I have wrote. I was lucky enough to attend the first ever event using Silverstone new pit complex, what a stunning facility they have provided and it's about time too!

Basiclly I will pass comment on anything motorsport as I love nearly all of it. I will mention anything from touring cars, GT's, V8 Supercars, British Superbikes right through to F1 and Moto GP. I may even mention the WRC too.

I'm not sure what to start with first the F1 'blown diffuser' joke or the WRC tactics that ruin what could be the greatest championship for years.

If there a championship you'd like to here about just email or tweet me via @jimmy_b_84James Fosterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01864346918262519413noreply@blogger.com1
